Your Wacom Cintiq experience

Posted by boybogart - January 3rd, 2012

2011 was very kind to me. I had a lot of projects, saved some dough and now I was thinking about buying a cintiq to speed up my animation workflow.

However, my research about cintiqs confused me more than it enlightened me. I was planning to get a 12wx but so many people hated that thing. There were problems regarding the color calibration, heat and surface scratches. So the next logical choice to me is the cintiq 21ux but I think I could get a second hand car with that kind of price.

Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to pay the price if it will speed up my process, so it would be helpful if people who had an experience with cintiqs help me out on my decision. As I said above, I did my research about it, read some reviews but it would be awesome if I could get the Flash animator's point of view on this, most reviews I read are from graphic artists. Photoshop and sketchbook pro drawing tools > Flash drawing tools.

On a completely different topic, I haven't submitted anything substantial last year on NG so I'm planning to make it up this year by exploding in a bukkake of animation. And I promised to myself that I wouldn't be making anything new until I finished the animations that took a backseat last year, so watch out for that.

Here's a test scene that I did months ago for a short called turbo chicken:

You've got so many styles, man ... all of them great. Teach me how to animate plox

Sure thing man! You can hit me up anytime if you need any help, I'll gladly make up something informative for ya.

HappyHarry was really unhappy with the latest cintiq, that big ass one. Dunno exactly the particulars to that but he was upset at having invested so much in a device like that and not liking it.

So I guess he was unHappyHarry that night? teehee I had to say it.

But yeah, I remembered stalking him on twitter and reading his interviews to know if he uses a cintiq or not. I think he said on one twitter that he didn't like the 24hd because it was so big that he cannot reach for the keyboard anymore to use his shortcuts. So he returned to using a bamboo.

Gah, yet ANOTHER reason for Luis to avoid ze tablet ... elitist mouse coveter.

he got wacomaphobia

I look forward to this bukkake.

This is the first time a dude told me that. haha kiddin. I'll be reworking on the halloween short, making it better than what I showed you guys the last time.

I've gone from a Graphire to an Intuos to a Cintiq 12wx, and I have to say that the Cintiq is the single greatest purchase I have ever made.

Hmm..that is something to be said if you even tried out the intuos. Thanks for the input man, preciate it!

I use a 1.5x2.5" trackpad :(

I use the smallest, cheapest bamboo fun and I think you should too. It's just around a 100+ dollars but it's a thousand times better than a trackpad. :)

I had a Intuos 2 for about 6 or 7 years, then finally upgraded to a CINTIQ 12WX.. Honestly, not that happy with it. The colours are all funky and yellow and the screen is quite small, doesn't leave much room for the drawing canvas in Flash with the rest of the UI stuffed in there. My only experience with using the bigger one was at Egos place and I can comfortably say I preferred it a lot more, planning to get one as soon as I can afford to put some cash into it. I'd be curious to know why Harry didn't like it though as Luis mentioned.

I see..come to think of it, 12" of space isn't really spectacular especially when working with flash. I think you will have to zoom in most of the time. I wrote something above in reply to luis as why harry didn't like it but that's just from what I read in his twitter. Thanks for the response man!

I use a Cintiq 12wx. For my purposes it works perfectly. At first I noticed a bit of oddness in the color and picture and whatnot, but after an evening of calibrating any problem it had seemed negligible compared to how much it sped up my work flow. After a short period of adjustment it also upped the accuracy of my artwork to where I now prefer drawing on the tablet to pen and paper.

The one thing I would recommend is using it with a second monitor or a laptop. Especially if you have the 12inch. The screen can easily get cluttered, so its useful to have the second screen to keep all unnecessary windows and optimize your drawing space on the cintiq.

That's actually a great idea, maybe you can put all of flash's menu in your secondary monitor so all of your cintiq's space will be used only for drawing. Wait, I just rephrased what you said. lol. But yeah, thanks for the input man!

I use a tablet laptop, thinkpad by lenovo. prior to that intuous 3, prior to that mouse!

Nice setup! An advantage of a tablet laptop would be portability right? Cool beans!

My Programmer has the 12WX tablet his in love with it, Has not had any complaints yet (:

Aha! Another positive review of the 12wx, I'm getting reallllyyy tempted here. Thanks for the response man!

Yea for sure. The tablet on it is really good, and I can take my computer outside and animate with it on nice days =D I've been really happy with it so far

Yeah, animating outside on a windy summer afternoon, drinking cool aid is like the ultimate setup! Screw home offices! haha

Really liked the turbo chicken test. FBF4LIFE! :)

FBF fo lyf! Until a client asks me to make a 5 second commeercial in two weeks, then it's time for TWEENING galore! hahaha

I love the animation so far :D
